Portfolio Slow Boat
A collotype-printed "Slow Boat" portfolio will be released by Kyoto's Benrido.
Six selected photographs from the photo book "Slow Boat" are housed in a special case. Each photograph is independent, so they can be framed and displayed.
What is collotype: A particularly old photo-printing technique that was once widely used to produce postcards and albums. Today, it is used in special situations such as reproducing cultural
assets and paintings.
Offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shades with the density of small halftone dots, but collotype expresses them with continuous tone, allowing for intricate detail
that is closer to the real thing, like a photograph.

Back in 1996 in my mid-thirties after publishing DISTANCE, a high-contrast B&W photo book, there was a stretch when I was shooting with both B&W negative and positive color films. After a while I encountered negative color films and naturally, I said goodbye to B&W and positive films. Recently I found a lot of positive films from those days that I had forgotten about and I cut out the frames that I thought were good and set them aside as my first check, and now that I couldn’t find those shots preliminary checked as the important ones, I thought that maybe it was destined to happen. So, moving forward I copied the remaining photos with a digital camera. It is this body of works that I call “My Ektachrome” that I produced by adjusting the faded colors to my favorite color profile in Photoshop just like my handmade darkroom color prints.

These days the increasing prices and the difficulties in finding my favorite film and photographic paper in addition to how demanding the darkroom printing process is; long hours and physical and mental effort. And recently when wondering about my age and the near future, I thought of the possibility of switching to a digital camera from now on.
